Liebenwalde’s roots go back to the 13th century. A settlement grew up in the shadow of a castle, where the construction of a church soon reflected a flourishing community. It was here that the Ascanian margraves established the seat of a provostry. A provost (Heinricus de Levenwalde) is first mentioned in 1244, and

in 1504 the seat was officially transferred to Templin. Liebenwald’s church building fell victim to several fires, including in 1627 and 1686. The damaged church had to be rebuilt in 1732, 

but it was destroyed again in the last great fire of 1832. Building inspector Hermann from Zehdenick was commissioned to plan the new structure. In doing so, he was guided by the standards established by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. The latter corrected Hermann’s design in his function as Commissioner of the Royal Construction Department: this was what gave it its characteristic features. The two-storey window arrangement, the separate tower, the pulpit, baptismal font, organ facade, altar and ceiling lights were created according to Schinkel’s ideas, as were two forged stoves, one of which can still be seen today.
