Capriolenhof farm is in the heart of the forest in the Kleine Schorfheide nature conservation area. Because of its isolated location, the goat farm can only be reached via a six kilometre sandy path which is best travelled on foot or by bicycle from Bredereiche. Or for watersport enthusiasts and tourists stopping off at Regow Lock, because the River Havel flows right past here. The landscape gave it its previous name, “Schleusenhof Regow” (Regow Lock Farm).
Germany’s biggest herdbook breeding farm

In 2012, the owners Sabine Denell and Hans-Peter Dill renamed the family-run farm as Capriolenhof – derived from Capra, the goat and their typical caprioles or leaps. With 150 Toggenburger goats, Capriolenhof is the largest herdbook farm in Germany for this breed, which are particularly suited for extensive landscape maintenance. The animals graze on 100 hectares of heath. The goatherd leads them out every day and lets them eat whatever is available for the time of year.

Lots of outstanding cheeses

Sabine Denell makes 20 different varieties of cheese from the milk in the former lock keeper’s house where the operation is based. New varieties are constantly being added. The multi-award winning cheese is also to be found in haute cuisine and is available at selected restaurants and hotels in Berlin-Brandenburg as well as at the farm shop and café.

A large range of cheeses

The farm shop can seat five inside with a further 40 seats outside in the yard surrounded by greenery. The products from the farm taste much more intense there, namely kid goat’s meat, cheese nibbles, a range of hot and cold drinks, goat’s milk ice-cream and cheesecake. Sabine Denell and Hans-Peter Dill also deliver the hand-made cheese by subscription to regional customers and sell it at two organic markets in Berlin.

Regional cooperation

Some of the goat’s milk is brought around 20 kilometres to ice-cream café Cadillac in Templin and also makes its way back to freezer at the farm shop after being made into ice-cream. The local circular economy is important to both businesses. That is why the also cooperate with the Hullerbusch sheep farm almost 30 kilometres away, where the animals are slaughtered. The best time to visit Capriolenhof is mid-June to the beginning of September – because that is when the best range of kid meat and cheeses is available and the perfume from the blossoming heath is a feast for the senses.

Goat’s meat, goat’s meat sausage, goat’s milk products such as cheese (20 varieties including “Hippifrisch” cream cheese and “Blühende Landschaften Lavendel” soft cheese).

Gastronomy

The farm shop and integrated café can seat five with a further 40 seats outside in the yard surrounded by greenery. The shop sells products from the farm, kid goat’s meat, cheese nibbles, a range of hot and cold drinks, goat’s milk ice-cream and cheesecake. The café is very popular for its “Käse-Uhr” (cheese clock), a platter to sample lots of different varieties of cheese.
