The Zieten circular hiking trail first leads from Wustrau through the picturesque village and later along the forest and fields to the fishing village of Altfriesack. There you can marvel at the historic drawbridge ‘in action’. Refreshed with a fish sandwich, the trail then leads hikers on to the shores of Lake Ruppin. Photo stops are always worthwhile, but especially at the obelisk and the ‘Lake Battle Monument’ by artist Matthias Zagon Hohl-Stein. Really, a naval battle on Lake Ruppin? Well, the young Knesebeck from Karwe and the young Zieten from Wustrau are said to have actually staged one in 1785, according to Theodor Fontane...

The route leads past the Zieten Castle and the village church with the Zieten graves to the Zieten Monument and the Brandenburg-Prussia Museum, which houses a permanent exhibition, changing special exhibitions and a tourist information centre.

Length: 6 km, approx. 1 hr. 30 min.

Start/Finish: 16818 Wustrau-Altfriesack, Ernst-Thälmann-Str. 2

Arrival/departure:

Public transport: From Berlin, take the RE 6 to Neuruppin, Rheinsberger Tor. In front of the railway station, take bus no. 777 to Wustrau, Hauptstraße. After a 3-minute walk you will reach the starting point, Ernst-Thälmann-Str. 2. This is also the end point of the hike.

By car: Coming from Berlin, take the A111 motorway onto the A10 towards Hamburg. Then change to the A 24 and leave the motorway at the Neuruppin Süd exit and take the L 16 to Wustrau-Altfriesack.

Route: From Wustrau-Altfriesack to Altfriesack and back to Wustrau-Altfriesack

Route description: The starting point is the bus stop in Wustrau, Ernst-Thälmann-Str. 2. From Ernst-Thälmann-Straße, the hiking trail branches off to the left into Flatower Straße, crosses the Rhin bridge and then turns left again. The route continues along a nature trail that offers breathtaking scenery. After around 1.1 kilometres, the trail turns left again to continue to Altfriesack. There is a restored drawbridge in Altfriesack, followed by a modern lock. After crossing the L 164 in Altfriesack, follow the path through a wood towards Wustrau. At the end of the forest path are holiday and weekend homes with a view of Lake Ruppin. In Wustrau, the path leads past the castle, followed by the local history museum and the Brandenburg-Prussia Museum. The walk ends at the starting point, Ernst-Thälmann-Straße bus stop, after passing Friedensplatz.

Worth seeing: Luch landscapes, old drawbridge in Altfriesack, Altfriesacker Götze (wooden cult figure), obelisk from 1790, castle in Wustrau, local history museum, historic church, Zietendenkmal, Brandenburg-Prussia Museum, Friedensplatz.
