Fontane loved to stay at Liebenberg Castle and Park – he even dedicated a chapter to Liebenberg in his work Walks through the Brandenburg Marches – Five Palaces. This history-steeped place has a fascinating past. The bailiff Hand von Bredow from Uckermark founded Liebenberg knight’s estate in the 16th century. It then passed to the von Hertefeld family, who promoted agriculture: they renovated the estate in the 19th century and had the park designed based on plans by Peter Josef Lenné. The Lenné Park is still preserved to this day. Around the turn of the century, Philipp Graf zu Eulenburg und Hertefeld added a lake house to the estate – the Seehaus am Großen Lankesee . But Liebenberg gained political significance, too. Emperor Wilhelm II, a close friend of the count, liked to stay in Liebenberg to go hunting. Important political planning was done here, too. Liebenberg castle and estate was restored true to the original by Deutsche Kreditbank AG in 2004 and now does full justice to its glorious past. Today the castle and lake house are used as a hotel. Schloss & Gut Liebenberg hosts year-round events and festivals for the general public such as the Easter and Christmas markets as well as the Köhlerfest and Oktoberfest. The Lenné Park is a great place for a walk any day of the week. The historic fieldstone church dating back to the 13th century, the castle chapel and the museum are also open to visitors.
